Intent
We want our children to have the opportunity to learn a wide range of creative art skills and techniques that they will then be able to apply to represent and create their own work.
We want children to develop confidence in a range of skills and regard themselves as able to ‘do art.’
We want children to experience success in their outcomes at every stage of learning.
We want children to gain an appreciation and understanding of the variety and diversity of the history and world of art by learning about significant artists and how they produced their work.
We want children to enjoy art and being creative. We recognise that being creative and experiencing being part of a creative process is conducive to wellbeing and enhancing children’s mental health.
Implementation
From September 2021 we will use Kapow Art and Design resources to structure progression in skills and ensure coverage of the National Curriculum content.
The structure of the curriculum provides units of work for each year group with specific lessons. The lessons may be delivered on a weekly basis within a chosen half term or a unit could be delivered as part of a super learning day.
Units of work address these themes;
Children will work in sketch books and store their final pieces of work in a folder that will stay with them through school. In this way a continuous record of progress and development in art will be created that the child can refer to, revisit learnt skills and make choices about the medium they may wish to use in their own art work.
Impact
Progress in Art and design will be assessed by;
Children will enjoy and value art and design. They will understand and enjoy the process of creating art as well as the outcome achieved.
Children will understand and appreciate the impact of being part of a creative process on their wellbeing.

- Evaluation of their own outcomes and those of peers and famous artists
- In some instances a teacher may adapt the curriculum resources to apply them to compliment a topic or area of learning in another subject. Eg. Studying Pop Art and using the techniques and design features to design product packaging as part of a Design Technology unit of work.

- Looking at pupil’s work, especially over time as they gain skills and knowledge
- Observing teaching and learning in art activities
- Talking to children about what they have learnt in art, what they have enjoyed and what they would like to improve.
- Recording progress against skills and knowledge outcomes from the curriculum
- Children will develop and practise skills in art and show progress in all 5 themed areas of learning.
Children will enjoy and value art and design. They will understand and enjoy the process of creating art as well as the outcome achieved.
